Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome: Causes and Solutions

Computer vision syndrome is a condition resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer display for protracted,uninterrupted periods of time.Some symptoms of CVS include headache,blurred vision,neck pain,redness in the eyes,fatigue,eyestrain, dry eyes,irritated eyes,double vision and difficulty refocusing the eyes. The symptoms can be further aggravated by improper lighting conditions, air moving past the eyes( e.g. direct air from a fan, air conditioning)and uncorrected refractive errors. CVS affects about 90% of the people who spend 7hrs or more a day on the computer.

3 steps to reduce your risk of CVS

  • Get a comprehensive eye exam, more so if you get symptoms of double vision, dryness and irritations. Having a routine comprehensive eye exam is the most important thing you can do to help with CVS.
  • Exercise your eyes. Use the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes on your Computer, take a break. Look at a distance of 20 meters for 20 seconds. This helps to relax the focusing muscles inside the eye. It reduces fatigue and accommodative spasm.
  • Consider anti-reflective eyewear. For the greatest comfort of your Computer, wear glasses that correct refractive errors. Ensure they have an antireflective surface treatment.

Carrots play a vital role in eye health because they contain beta-carotene—a type of antioxidant also found in other fruits. However, carrots are especially rich in it, which gives them their bright orange color.

As an antioxidant, beta-carotene has cancer-fighting properties.

During pregnancy, consuming sufficient amounts of carrot can help combat conditions like retinoblastoma—a tumor that affects the eyes, especially in newborns and young children.

In adults, beta-carotene may help protect against malignant melanoma, another type of eye tumor.

Beta-carotene also helps prevent macular degeneration, an age-related condition that affects the back of the eyes. It works by slowing the progression of the disease and preventing the death of retinal cells.

Therefore, eating carrots daily—or at least three times a week—supports both eye and general health.
